Rising young politician Robert Bond leads a campaign to break a generous rail-road building contract given to industrialist Robert Reid in Newfoundland in the 1900's, and is elected premier. In revenge the wealthy Reid's turn to Edward Morris, who defects from Bond's cabinet, wrecks his party, and defeats him after a dramatic tie election.
